What is a Heat Pump?

A heat pump is a residential HVAC system which is capable of both heat and cooling homes thanks to its utilization of the heat transfer process. The key to its unique operation is a component called the reversing valve, which allows for a heat pump to reverse its refrigerant cycle as well as the roles of the indoor and outdoor coils. When in its cooling mode, a heat pump acts just like a more traditional central air conditioning system. Heat is absorbed from the air in the home, and the hot refrigerant makes its way to the outdoor unit. The heat from the refrigerant within the outdoor coil is released to the even hotter air outside, and the process is repeated until the home is sufficiently cooled throughout.

During the winter season, the heat pump actually makes use of existing heat in the air outside. With our relatively mild winter weather, a heat pump is a great heating option. The heat is absorbed, and the warmed refrigerant is compressed in the compressor, making it even hotter. The heat from this refrigerant is then used to warm air in the house, and that warm air is distributed throughout the household via ductwork. Not only is this method of heating quite efficient, as it utilizes existing heat and requires just a small amount of electricity, but it is also quite environmentally friendly.

We Install and Service Heat Pumps

The overly simplistic explanation of how heat pumps work above may lead you to think that the equipment itself is simple enough to install or service on your own. This could not be further from the truth. Every step of the installation process—from the sizing of the heat pump itself to the integration of air ducts throughout your home—will factor into the successful operation of your system. That is why only trained professionals can install your heat pump.

Keeping a heat pump in prime working condition also requires routine maintenance services, and you will eventually find that you need heat pump repairs as well.
